Ancestry CA Frequently Asked Questions

Whay is Ancestry.ca Refund Process?

  • To request a refund of your AncestryDNA kit, you must (1) provide the same information you provided to Ancestry.ca when you placed your kit order, and (2) return your AncestryDNA kit to Ancestry.ca. Please contact Member Services for more information.

  • Ancestry does not refund shipping and processing charges or any applicable taxes paid on the non-refundable portion for kits purchased in the United States. All refunds will be credited to the billing method associated with your account.

How to Activate my membership?

  • Open your gift membership email from Ancestry.

  • In the email, click Access your gift or Access your membership.

  • If you don't have an Ancestry account, fill in your information and click Continue. If you do have an Ancestry account, click Log in here at the top and sign in, or (if you're already signed in) enter your address and phone number and click Continue.

  • On the Welcome to Ancestry page, click Continue.

How to build your tree using historical records?

  • If you know details like the name and birthdate of one of your ancestors—even if it's a parent or grandparent—you can often find records that include their parents' names.  For example, a census record from when they were a child would likely contain the names of your ancestor and their parents.

  • To find unknown ancestors, start by searching for records for your oldest known relatives. If this is your grandmother, for example, search for records with your grandmother's name in them. When you find records where she appears, save the record to your tree, and add any new information from the record (like her place of birth or marriage date) to your tree.

  • When you find records for your grandmother that mention her parents or siblings, add them as new people to your tree. Census records can be especially useful for finding someone's immediate family members.

  • Once you've found your grandmother's parents' names and added them to your tree, start searching for records for each of her parents, keeping an eye out for records that include their siblings and parents. By working your way backward in time like this, you can often find older and older ancestors.

How do I take Ancestry.ca's Test?

AncestryDNA is a simple saliva test you can do in the comfort of your own home. Once you order, you will receive the AncestryDNA kit in the mail in a matter of days. Your AncestryDNA kit includes full instructions, a saliva collection tube, and a prepaid return mailer (so you don't have additional costs to return your DNA.) After returning your sample by just dropping it in the mail, your DNA is processed at the lab. You then receive an email notifying you that your results are ready to explore on the AncestryDNA website.

How to Pausing my membership?

  • In the Membership section, click Cancel membership.

  • Click Pause Membership, then click Continue.

  • Select 1 month or 2 months, then click Pause.

  • When you pause your membership, the pause begins at the end of your current membership period (not on the day you set up the pause). To find this date, click your name in the top-right corner of Ancestry > Account Settings > Membership section > Renews on date.

What is a gift membership?

A gift membership is a non-renewing membership paid for by one person (the gift-giver) to be used by someone else (the recipient), which gives the recipient access to Ancestry's records and services for a period of time.
