Is the free version of s2Member still being actively developed and maintained?
Yes! The free version of s2Member (i.e., the s2Member Framework) is the foundation upon which s2Member Pro is developed. Continued development of both the free s2Member Framework and s2Member Pro marches on!)
Does s2Member store any billing information?
s2Member does not store any billing or credit card information. At the time of purchase, the billing and payment information is sent securely to the payment gateway (e.g., PayPal or Stripe) using modern encryption technologies (SSL).
s2Member retains no records of the information that was sent to the payment gateway for billing purposes (with one exception: when logging is enabled; see below).
Instead, s2Member listens for messages from the payment gateway so that if a recurring payment (or a one-time payment) fails, s2Member can use the success/failure notification to determine what to do (to grant access, deny access, or revoke existing access). All of that is handled by s2Member automatically behind the scenes, between s2Member and the payment gateway.
What about personal information?
The only personal member information that s2Member will store inside your WordPress database are the member's First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Username, IP Address used during registration, Payment Gateway used (e.g., PayPal, Stripe, Authorize.Net, etc.), Subscriber ID and/or Transaction Number from the payment gateway, and any other information that you choose to collect as part of your registration process through Custom Registration/Profile Fields (again, excluding any billing address or specific payment details).Is the free version of s2Member still being actively developed and maintained?

What do I need to know about the AliPay phaseout?
s2Member Pro has included an AliPay payment gateway integration for quite a few years now. However, they stopped advertising and/or featuring this integration in any official way approximately 2 years ago.
Now, as of June 15th, 2015 they are officially deprecating this integration with AliPay, and announcing that their intention is to phase support for AliPay out over a short period of time.
To clarify, they will not be working to enhance or update the existing integration with AliPay. However, they will continue to offer assistance with their existing AliPay integration until November 2015.
What does this mean for me if I'm using AliPay?
They aren't stripping the AliPay integration out completely—not right now. Therefore, you may continue to use the AliPay integration as it exists. However, future versions of s2Member Pro will be released without AliPay.
This will occur in November 2015; i.e., new versions of s2Member Pro will be released without the AliPay integration. What then? You can choose not to upgrade; i.e., to continue using the AliPay integration from a previous release of s2Member Pro. Or, you could consider a move to Stripe, PayPal Pro, or Authorize.Net.
