What do I need to know about the Notary State Exam?
Notarized exams administered by California CPS proctors are required. Out of 45 questions, you must answer 33 correctly with at least 70%. The exam is based on multiple choice questions.
How soon do I start taking the test?
You can take the 6-hour course as early as 6 months before the commission expires. If you are taking a three-hour refresher course, they strongly recommend that you start the process at least four to six months before your current commission expires.

Six-Hour Certification Course - Anyone seeking appointment as a Notary Public must satisfactorily complete a six-hour course of study approved by the Secretary of State prior to appointment. Note: No matter how many notary commission terms you have held in the past, you must take at least one state-approved six-hour course.
Three-Hour Renewal Course - California notaries currently holding a valid commission who have completed at least one six-hour course of study may complete an approved three-hour refresher course prior to reappointment. Important: The three-hour refresher course will only be accepted if you apply for reappointment (take a course, submit an application, and pass a state-approved exam) before your current commission expires. If your commission expires before you complete the course, you must take an additional 6 hours of certification before you can be reappointed.
