Are their PrimaTek minerals ethically sourced?
They work diligently to build good relationships with mines around the world where they source their minerals. Their mineralogist personally visits every facility to ensure they can observe safe working conditions, fair treatment of workers, as well as environmentally responsible operations with sustainability in mind.
Can I take a tour of your manufacturing facility?
They are not offering tours at this time. Please refer to their brochure, How They Make Paint, to learn more about their manufacturing.
Why did my tube of paint seem separated when I first opened it?
Binder can separate occasionally from some of the denser pigments. Their paint tubes are filled from the bottom, then crimped and boxed to ship. Once out of the box, they’re flipped to hang by the cap on display racks, so if there was a little air space left in the bottom of the tube after being crimped, a dense pigment can gradually settle to the bottom and push a small amount of excess binder (gum arabic) up to the top. You can squeeze out and discard any excess binder without affecting the performance of the paint.

How does Daniel Smith test paint for possible toxicity?
Product safety is of the utmost importance to everyone at Daniel Smith. As an ACMI (Art and Creative Materials Institute) member since 1994, they send all their paint recipes/formulas with product samples to Duke University. ACMI uses Duke to test products that will bear the ACMI label, which assures comprehensive testing and evaluation by their board-certified PhD toxicologists, as well as independent labs when needed. Their products are labeled per their toxicologists’ written directions. Safety Data Sheets are created by these toxicologists and made available to all of their customers.
